Councillor Neil Rogers said ‘This was the first presentation in the Broughton Community to give recognition to people’s involvement and commitment in making their community a better place to live.’

Children In Need

In the face of strong competition from Wrexham town centre, Broughton Community organised their own event in Brynteg Memorial Centre on November 18th 2005 and it was a resounding success! The aim of the evening was to recognise all the hard work put in by local residents and to gather together all the funds raised by the Broughton Community and present it as a Grand Total.

Entertainment was provided by the Guides, the Guys and Dolls Dance Group, local residents Dorothy and Peter McCarthy, pupils from Brynteg C.P. and Nawari Belly Dancers. Sandra Williams accepted donations on behalf of the Community from Ysgol Penrhyn, Community House, the Community Council, Pentre Broughton Darby and Joan Club, 1st Brynteg Brownies and Rainbows and many others.

The total presented at the end of the evening was a fantastic £1,184! Congratulations to everyone who raised money and thank you to everyone who came and supported the event.

Recycling Sessions

Six workshops were undertaken by Wrexham County Borough Councils’ Recycling Officer during October around the 3R’s theme (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). They were held for a mix of Year 5 and 6 pupils at Brynteg C.P., Ysgol Penrhyn and Blacklane C.P. Each school had two visits with a presentation followed by a practical activity. Each pupil made their own piece of recycled paper and helped to create a 3R’s collage which will now be displayed in their school.

Green Halloween

The Broughton Partnership Board Environmental Working Group held a Green Halloween' Fun Day on Thursday 27th October from 10am - 3pm at The Memorial Centre. The day was a fantastic success and many local residents and children participated in the organised activities which included paper making, recycling, twiggy lantern making, a walk in moss valley, a mini beast hunt, a spooky treasure hunt and an appearance from 'Recycle with Michael'! A big thank you to Wrexham Youth Service and Brynteg Play Scheme who supported the event.

Orchard Project
The Broughton Partnership Boards’ Environmental Working Group, BTCV and Brynteg School will be working in partnership with Simon Farr of Apple Tree Education,

As part of the environmental improvements planned for Brynteg’s ‘Top Pitch’ the Broughton Partnership Boards’ Environmental Working Group, BTCV and local primary schools have been working in partnership with Simon Farr of Apple Tree Education in an exciting project, planting fruit trees. This is the first phase of a more extensive improvement of the ‘Top pitch’.

Commencing the 9th May 2005 the children from Years 5 and 6 from Brynteg C.P. planted a mixture of traditional Welsh pear and apple varieties on the ‘Top Pitch’ and also learned about biodiversity issues and local food production. Due to the success of the scheme with Brynteg C.P. it was then expanded to Ysgol Penrhyn and Black Lane C.P in October 2005. The children in all the schools really enjoyed the experience and it is hoped that in the future the planted areas will provide an educational resource as well as an area of natural beauty.

On the ‘Top Pitch’ once the orchard area is established, the site will receive further conservation work from BTCV Cymru and local volunteers to plant and encourage meadow wildflower species, along with siting seating areas for people to enjoy the atmosphere, wildlife and beautiful views.

I.C.C.

August 2005 saw the work completed on Ysgol Brynteg as part of the Integrated Children’s Centre in Broughton. The work has provided a self-contained area that can be used in school holidays and outside school hours. The first of these activities was the holiday childcare club that ran for the six weeks of the summer holidays. In these sessions qualified staff supplied affordable childcare from 8am-6pm and provided various games, crafts and outings for the children.

The scheme will run in the Easter and Summer holiday and every half term but will not run in the Christmas holidays.

Youth Cafe

The Youth Café is still very well attended and numbers are growing every week. The success of this project knows no bounds. Plans for the 'Info Shop' are now well under way. WATCH OUT for more details in the Community House over the next couple of weeks. Staff and Volunteers would like to thank all those who use the Youth Café for their continued support and would like to congratulate the Young People themselves on their excellent behaviour whilst helping to make this project the success it is fast becoming.

Darby and Joan Club

During July the Darby & Joan Club welcomed three new members. The clubs has enjoyed a number of outings during the summer months, and conclude their trips with a visit to the Albert Docks and Harry Ramsdens for a sing-along ’n’ chips. Autumn months to include harvest hotpot, bring and buy sale and a Christmas party.

In view of the resignation of current treasurer Margaret Davies, due to ill health, new officers have been selected.
Doreen Davies current leader takes over as treasurer.
Megan Roberts long standing secretary remains.
Mary Lea, Leader.
Other WVRS committee members are Kath Hughes, Diane Broad, and Mary Roberts.
Everyone at Darby & Joan Club wish Margaret well, and hope to see both her and Tom at Darby & Joan in the not to distant future. Margaret had served as treasurer for eighteen years.

Broughton Community Safety Team

The Broughton Community Safety Partnership has recently been launched in the Broughton area and aims to address the needs and requirements of local residents.   A venue for this team has been secured via the help and support of local AMPM shop owner Mr Dino Pattell.   The new office is located above AMPM on Darby Road, Brynteg and will be a base for local Community Beat Managers, Police Community Support Officer and Neighbourhood Warden.

The need for a Community based office was highlighted through local consultation and Community Safety Questionnaire's issued by the Community Safety Working Group in conjunction with the Broughton Partnership Board.   One of the main aims to be addressed is local people's fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.   It is anticipated the arrival of the Community Safety Partnership will begin to address these fears and develop links with local residents.   We would like to welcome the newly appointed Neighbourhood Warden, Emma Thacker who will be dealing with a wide range of community issues on   daily basis, and also Sue Hough who is the newly appointed Police Community Support Officer.

Solway Bank

Improvement work to prevent football pitches at Solway Banks from flooding is finally underway. Funding of almost £150,000 was recently secured from the Sports Council for Wales, Broughton Community Council and Wrexham Council to install a drainage system that will prevent flooding that often caused matches to be postponed in wet weather.

Residents have been waiting for several years for a solution and work started on the scheme just before the successful Broughton Summer Fun Day and it now hoped the area will be used regularly for such events.

Councillor Neil Rogers, local member, said, “I am very pleased to see the work begin after so much work has been done to secure this project. Thanks must go to the Broughton Partnership Board, Broughton Community Council, Brynteg Village Football Club, Brymbo Lodge Football Club, and the Sports Council for Wales, Wrexham Council and the Broughton Strategy Team for all their work over the last four years”.

Steve Bayley, Wrexham Council’s Chief Economic Development Officer, said “improvements to the football pitches was the last piece in the jigsaw to create top facilities for the community. Partnership working is improving our communities throughout the borough. Solway Banks has seen the addition of a multi-use games area, a skate park and changing room”.

WORK TO BE COMPLETED BY SEPTEMBER 2006

Community Football Match

Thursday 18th August 2005 saw the first ever football match between the Young people of the Broughton area v North Wales Police. The match was held at Brymbo Sports and Social Club and was a great success. It both encouraged partnership working and helped to breakdown barriers between young people and police officers. P.C Martin Price said, “the event has given us an opportunity to get to know local young people better through social activities. A big thank you to all involved”.

Following the match refreshments were provided and the winning team was presented with the cup. The presentation was made by the Broughton Strategy Team and AMPM shop owner Mr Dino Paletta.
