Small Grant Scheme
The Broughton Partnership Board provides a Small Grants scheme, funding
for which was obtained from the Welsh Assembly Government. The scheme
offers financial support for new and existing community groups targeting
residents in Southsea and Brynteg. Groups can apply for a maximum grant
of £750. Since the start of the scheme in 1999, approximately £22,500
has been awarded to groups which operate within the community.

Memorial Centre
The Broughton Strategy Team has worked with local people to develop plans
for the Memorial Centre, Quarry Road, Brynteg. Renovations to the existing
library and Memorial Hall commenced in January 2002 and the new ‘Memorial
Centre’ including a link extension to house the new Lifelong Learning
Centre was officially opened in September 2002. This project cost in the
region of £1 million, funding for which was obtained from the Welsh
Assembly Government’s ‘Local Regeneration Fund’. Free
training is now available to all residents within the local community,
from the new Memorial Centre.

Community House
Work has been ongoing to develop a ‘Community House’ facility
at 17 Darby Road, Brynteg. £283,752 was secured from the Welsh Assembly
Government’s ‘Communities First’ Programme in January
2002.
The Community House will comprise a community café, advice and
information room, small ICT suite for pre-beginner courses, small office
area and sessional crèche, and it will be the base for the provision
of a number of services. A group of local residents formed the ‘Community
House Committee’ to steer and manage its development, which is targeted
for completion in April 2003. Part of the funding secured will provide
staff for the Community House, in addition to the existing staff of the
Broughton Strategy Team.

Community Newsletter
Since 1999 a community newsletter has been distributed free of charge
to local residents, in which many of the articles are produced by residents
and by organisers of the community groups. Funding for the production
of the newsletter has been secured from the European Social Fund (ESF)
and the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘People In Communities’
Programme.

Play Area for Young People
Young People from the Broughton area were consulted about their needs
for recreational facilities. They identified a need for skate equipment,
a basketball area, and a sheltered seating area. In July 2002, the young
People’s Play area, consisting of this equipment was installed on
the Solway Banks site, Southsea. The total project cost approximately
£35,000 and was funded by a ‘Play 2000’ grant and the
Broughton Partnership Board, which secured its funding from the Welsh
Assembly Government’s ‘People In Communities’ Programme.

Improvements to Retail Area, Brynteg
Funding has recently been secured to improve the retail premises on Darby
Road, Brynteg. The improvements will include:
• New paving to the shop fronts
• Improved street lighting
• The removal of existing walls and replacement with bow-top railings
• New coloured shutters to shop premises
Funding for this project was secured from the Welsh Assembly Government’s
‘Small Retailers In Deprived Areas’ Fund

Fresh Start (Exercise Scheme)
Residents from the Broughton area are benefiting from free exercise classes
held at the Memorial Centre, Brynteg, which incorporate elements of circuit
training. Funding secured from the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘People
In Communities’ Programme, was used to purchase exercise equipment
and provide a qualified instructor for the exercise class.

Welfare Rights Service
Funding from the Welsh Assembly Governments ‘People In Communities’
Programme was initially secured to run a welfare rights project for three
years (2000-2003) within the local community. This has been used to provide
a full time Welfare Rights and Money Advice Officer. Much of the officer’s
work has been dedicated to making home visits, in addition to a two hour
open door advice session, held locally.

CCTV System
Two CCTV Cameras were installed within the community, and the Broughton
Partnership Board has supported this scheme by securing funding to support
monitoring and maintaining the cameras.

Tennis Sessions for Schoolchildren
£750 was secured from the Sports Council of Wales’ Communities
Chest Fund for 20 local schoolchildren to participate in free tennis coaching
at the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre in Wrexham. The sessions, which
were part of the increased opportunities for young people in the community,
ran between January and April 2002, and were enjoyed by all children who
took part.

Multi-Media Course
A programme has been running within the Broughton Community for young
people, aged 14 to 18, to participate in multi-media training.
